Herb Onion Batter Bread

1 loaf

Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed rosemary leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 egg

Directions

Preheat oven to 375° F.

In large mixer bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt, sage, rosemary and thyme; mix well.

Sauté onion in butter until golden; add to flour mixture. Add water and egg. Blend at low speed until moistened; beat 3 minutes at medium speed.

By hand, gradually stir in remaining flour to make a stiff batter. Spoon into greased 2-quart casserole. Cover; let rise in warm place until light and doubled, about 1 hour.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until golden brown. Remove from pan; serve warm or cold.
